Transgender education series set

A coalition of community groups is sponsoring a series of transgender educational and community events led by Lydia Sausa, M.S., Ph.D.

    Sausa will lead:

162; Transgender Health Care Training for medical providers, Oct. 11, 6 p.m. at the Rogue Valley Medical Center, Room 2. To register, call 552-8329.

162; "Disparities and Discoveries": A Panel Discussion on Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Health Care on Oct. 13, 7 p.m., at the Stevenson Student Union Arena on Southern Oregon University's campus. Public is invited. For information, call 552-8329.

Other events include cultural competency trainings for SOU's faculty and staff and the wider LBGT community.

The passage of the Basic Fairness Legislation (Senate Bill 2 and H.B. 2007) gave impetus to addressing transgender and lesbian, bisexual, and gay health care issues in Oregon, according to event coordinators

Transgender people in the Rogue Valley have long faced a lack of services, appropriate health care and educational resources, according to Lori Warfield, the former director of the Queer Resource Center at Southern Oregon University

"When we assessed resources for transgendered students, we were overwhelmed by the lack of available practitioners who were trans-friendly," Warfield said. "Practitioners were approachable but not yet prepared."

With more than ten years of experience in the field of transgender health disparities and HIV services, Sausa has conducted HIV specific transgender research; provided over 125 comprehensive capacity building trainings for health professionals about transgender health and evidence-based HIV interventions and services; presented and guest lectured at over 50 international, national and regional conferences and universities; taught fourteen different graduate and undergraduate courses on sexuality, health and transgender studies; and written publications focusing on the needs of transgender communities in education, HIV prevention, and health care.

Sponsors include: Human Rights Coalition of Jackson County; Planned Parenthood of Southern Oregon; Oregon Action; Basic Rights Oregon; PRIDE Foundation; Queer Resource Center, Southern Oregon University (SOU); Commuter Resource Center, SOU; Women's Resource Center, SOU; Multicultural Resource Center, SOU; Student Affairs, SOU; Student Health Wellness Center, SOU; Gender Sexualities Union, SOU; The Rainbow Club, Rogue Community College; Not Straight, Not Sure Youth Group; Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center and American Cancer Society.
