Swanson scores 36 in Ashland victory

Ashland senior guard Anthony Swanson erupted for 36 points, including 17 in the second half, leading the Ashland boys basketball team to a 75-59 win over Westside Christian in the first round of the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic Thursday at Cascade Christian High School in Medford.

The win, Ashland’s fourth in a row, earned for the Grizzlies a Classic final four date with either defending Class 3A state champion Dayton or St. Mary’s.

Swanson hit 14 field goals, including five in the third quarter to help the Grizzlies (4-2) extend an eight-point halftime lead to 14 heading into the fourth.

“I thought his point total was a great example of what (Swanson) can do in the flow of the offense,” Ashland coach Sam Osofsky said. “I don’t really recall a possession where he broke our offense in any way. To be that hot and to be letting the shots come to him was pretty impressive.”

KJ Pippa added 12 points, including eight in the first half, and Adam Jones 11 for the Grizzlies, who rebounded from a sluggish start by capitalizing on Westside Christian’s early foul trouble.

The Eagles (3-5) were led by sophomore forward DL Scales, who scored 23 points, including 10 in the third. Jordan Jun added 15.

The St. Mary’s-Dayton game started late and didn’t conclude until after press deadlines.

“On one hand, we could play a local team [St. Mary’s] that we know is well coached and plays hard, and on the other hand we could play the defending 3A state champs,” Osofsky said of the potential matchups. “Both are exciting for us, and it’s a really good opportunity to get better.”

Sophomore post Malia Rodriguez scored 11 of her career-high 17 points in the second half to help Ashland lock up its first win of the season, 45-32, over Santiam Christian.

Mya Elder Hammond added nine points, six rebounds and four steals and Sarah Summers six rebounds and two steals for the Grizzlies (1-4), who will play Cascade Christian tonight at 6 p.m. in the second round of the Christmas Classic.

Ashland coach Antione Perry praised Rodriguez for being aggressive.

“In the second half they were trying to press and she was just attacking the basket,” Perry said of his 5-foot-10 post. “I thought it was great because I know she’s an undersized post player for us but she’s really quick and she has an advantage when she steps out and attacks the basket.”

Audrey Miller scored 12 points to lead Santiam Christian (1-5).
