The Ashland-based band Butcher calls itself "Southern Oregon's psychoactive haight-pholk jam band."

This is not to say the band hates folk, but rather, it has created its own style of deranged folk. The slogan references the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, the epicenter of the city's rock 'n' roll movement in the '60s, guitarist Matt Lambert says.

The band, which is Lambert, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Josh Sadler, bassist Larry Coble and drummer Greg Alford, plays original, jam-based rock and also rearranges and reimagines covers by The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Nathan Moore, Talking Heads and others.

"Songs start out folk and then build energy," Lambert says.

Butcher will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Caldera Tap House, 31 Water St., Ashland.

The cover is $5. Call 541-482-4677.
