Millicent Cummings

Singer and songwriter Millicent Cummings is the newest addition to Ashland's arts scene.

An artist in every sense of the word, Cummings is a versatile vocalist, acoustic guitarist, children's book author, poet, actress, educator, painter, sculptor and photographer.

This "mistress of media" or "Renaissance woman of the arts," as she has sometimes been called, and her young son moved to Ashland in July after 12 years in Hawaii.

"After scouring Seattle to Shasta over the past three months, Ashland stole my heart as the sister island I was looking for," she says. "There's a lot of aloha here."

Cummings is in the market for a band but, in the meantime, has been playing solo at various local venues.

This week, she plays at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Oberon's Tavern, 45 N. Main St., Ashland, and at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Paddy Brannan's Irish Pub, 23 S. Second St., Ashland. Both shows are free.

Cummings has written more than 400 songs and recorded three full-length albums on her independent record label, Jai Ma Music. Her 2012 album, "Compassionate Heart," ranges from rock and blues to Middle Eastern and folk music and is "a musical map of the spiritual journey," she says.
