Relay for Life benefit concert

A day of music, Sunday, May 13, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant & Bar will benefit the American Cancer Society, in conjunction with Ashland's Relay for Life event Saturday, May 19.

Frank Dalziel, who was diagnosed with colon cancer seven years ago, has organized the benefit concert for the past two years.

"It's a big event for me because I'm a survivor," he says. "I lost my mom in '99 to ovarian cancer, and my dad's been through two cancers in the last two years. When I was going through my cancer here in Ashland, I had a lot of community support. This is my way to give back."

Last year, the concert raised nearly $8,000.

"I'm shooting for over $10,000 this year," Dalziel says.

The day will kick off at 12:30 p.m. with solo pianist Jim Quinby playing jazz, R&B and boogie-woogie. Local bands, including the Paul Schmelling Trio with Danielle Kelly, David Pinsky & His Rhythm Kings, the Frankie Hernandez Trio, The Wild Goose All-Stars, The Rogue Suspects, Karen Lovely and Robbie DaCosta, will perform one-hour sets throughout the remainder of the afternoon.

The final act of the day, California blues harpist James Harman will perform at 7:30 p.m. The internationally known bluesman and his band, the Bamboo Porch Revue, featuring acclaimed washboard guitarist Nathan James, will present rollicking juke-joint blues.

The cover to the concert at Alex's is $10. There also will be a silent auction and raffle.
