Four Raiders earn weekly CCC honors

Southern Oregon’s Zach Beltz, Ariana Daniel, Rhett Gonzalez and Lauren Quirke were voted Cascade Conference athletes of the week Monday.

Beltz got field accolades, while Daniel and Gonzalez took track honors on the indoor circuit following Saturday’s Boise State Bronco Challenge. Quirke was named the softball player of the week for her performance during the Raiders’ 2-1 trip to the NAIA SoCal Classic.

Beltz, a senior from Elmira and already a two-time outdoor All-American, now owns the No. 5 spot on this season’s NAIA performance list after winning the long jump with a mark of 23 feet 10 inches. He’s an automatic qualifier for the NAIA indoor championships in the discipline, and he added a provisional-qualifying mark of 46-3 in the triple jump.

Daniel met the NAIA ‘A’ standard in her first 400-meter race of the season, placing second of 39 with a time of 57.15 seconds that put her at No. 7 on the national performance list, converting to 57.91. The junior — already a 400-meter outdoor All-American and last year’s CCC championships track athlete of the meet — also helped the SOU’s 4x400 relay team to a ‘B’ time that converted to 4:03.09, 19th on the national list.

Gonzalez earned the CCC’s track award for the second time in as many outings with a 60-meter hurdle time of 8.19 seconds, the 12th-fastest in the NAIA, in Saturday’s prelims. He was the runner-up in the finals and will join Beltz at the national indoor meet Feb. 28 through March 2 in Brookings, S.D.

Quirke, a junior third baseman and pitcher for the third-ranked Raider softball team, was locked in at the plate while going 8-for-11 with a walk over the weekend. The San Mateo College transfer hit her first home run at SOU, stroked two triples, scored seven runs and totaled seven RBIs.
