Even with an unconventional route to making her 2019 debut, Southern Oregon University right-hander Gabby Sandoval just went out and picked up where she left off last season.
Coming off an impressive first start of the 2019 highly-anticipated season, Sandoval was named the Cascade Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
SOU (2-0 overall) was originally supposed to play Simpson University (Calif.) and Menlo College (Calif.) in Redding, Calif., on both Saturday and Sunday. But rain in the area that ended up flooding the field the Raiders were supposed to play on forced the whole weekend to be canceled. Instead, SOU played doubleheader on Saturday against a familiar foe in CCC rival Corban — which was also originally scheduled to play the weekend in Redding — at U.S. Cellular Community Park in Medford.
It was there where Sandoval — who is coming off a 27-6 sophomore campaign in 2018 — tossed quite the season-opening gem.
In the Raiders’ 8-0 win in six innings, Sandoval — who had a four-run lead to work with after the opening frame — allowed just six hits and struck out six while walking two batters.
Corban didn’t have a runner get past second base in the game.
It was her 32nd complete game and 11th complete-game shutout of her career. She ranks fifth and second in school history in those two categories, respectively.
SOU makes its annual trip to Southern California this weekend to take part in the NAIA SoCal Classic starting on Friday morning. The Raiders will play seven games in the span of three days.
